Flip-It

FLIP IT® is a four-step supportive strategy, developed by Devereux Center for Resilient Children, to help young children learn about their feelings, gain self-control and reduce challenging behaviors. FLIP IT® is a strengths-based, common sense, and effective strategy that systematically and comprehensively uses embedded instruction within planned and routine activities. FLIP IT® teaches adults to respond positively to everyday challenges and challenging behaviors in children ages three to eight. Feelings, Limits, Inquiries and Prompts make up the easy mnemonic strategy that takes just a few minutes from start to finish. FLIP IT® includes teaching the concept, modeling, rehearsing, role-playing, prompting and providing feedback to children when the behavior occurs.

A reliable tool in helping prepare children for kindergarten, Springfield and Community Partnership of the Ozarks have been implementing the social and emotional assessment and classroom help through the DECA for more than 15 years. DECA assesses social emotional competence and identifies areas for improvement. FLIP IT® is the critical next step and adds to the strategies teachers and parents have to help children gain mastery of their feelings and behaviors. According to teachers of young children, disruptive behavior is one of the single greatest challenges they face in providing a high quality program, and there seems to be an increasing number of children who present with these problems. This concern is echoed by foster parents who are on the front lines dealing with our most vulnerable children.

According to FLIP IT® developers, children who are frequently “FLIPPED” become emotionally aware problem-solvers who develop healthy coping skills that will last a lifetime.
